Development and Conservation in the Colombian Amazon: Challenges and Alternatives
The Colombian Amazon covers about 40% of the country's area and 6% of the Amazon macro-region, the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Considering the pivotal role of this region in climate change and, on the other hand, the variety and magnitude of problems it currently faces, it is increasingly at the center of the global political and environmental agenda. It is not surprising then to observe frequent discourses, policies, projects and investments that seek to promote its development, reduce its conflicts and encourage conservation. In Colombia, such discourses and interventions have been shaped by decades of armed conflict, which has generated multiple impacts in the region. The public interest in the Amazon is an opportunity to conceive socially and environmentally sustainable development policies and practices that contribute to its conservation. This requires, however, to move away from totalizing discourses and understand the complexity and heterogeneity of its historical, political and socio-environmental dynamics. This course aims to contribute in this direction. In particular, it aims to address and discuss some of the historical and contemporary problems of the Colombian Amazon, their territorial expressions, the way in which these have been translated into various types of conflicts, as well as possible alternatives to overcome them.

Objectives
To understand some of the problems and conflicts in the Colombian Amazon, their territorial expressions, and possible solutions.
- To understand and critically analyze the discourses and policies that have been constructed around the development and conservation of the Colombian Amazon.
- To understand the nature and heterogeneity of some of the dynamics of territorial configuration within the region.
- To identify possible alternatives that can contribute to both peace building and sustainable social development.
Methodology
The course is structured in 5 thematic modules with a duration of two hours each. Pedagogical materials (readings, videos, podcasts) will be assigned for each module, which require prior reading and/or review by the participants. Each module will have a presentation led by the course instructor(s) and group discussions on the main topics addressed

Organizing Committee
- The academic coordinator Simon Uribe is associate Professor in the Faculty of International, Political and Urban studies at the Universidad del Rosario. His research revolves around the intersection of infrastructure, the state, and the history of frontiers. He has done extensive research on the relationship between infrastructure development and territorial conflicts in the Colombian Amazon. He is also interested in documentary filmmaking and between 2014 and 2018 directed Suspension, his first feature-length film. He is now working on a second feature film, Grounded, around the DC-3 WWII airplanes that connect remote villages in the Colombian Amazon. He co-leads de research group Selva y Conflicto at the Universidad del Rosario.
- The academic coordinator Javier Revelo Rebolledo assistant Professor at the Faculty of International, Political and Urban Studies, Universidad del Rosario. He obtained a Ph.D and a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania (United States), a BA degree in Political Science at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia) and a JD. degree at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He studies the political economy of Amazon deforestation in Colombia, in particular, how the territorial reach of the state is related to land ownership and use. He also investigates diverse conflicts associated with environmental land use planning and management, understanding them as crucial components of contemporary transformations in armed conflict. He co-leads de research group Selva y Conflicto at the Universidad del Rosario.
- The dministrative coordinator Ana María Franco is a professional in International Politics from Middlesex University in London, England and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Philosophy at Universidad del Rosario. She has experience in planning and implementation of educational and cooperation projects aimed at students, teachers, indigenous communities and vulnerable populations. She has also led relationship and fundraising strategies for state, non-profit and international organizations.
