The Earth System Sciences program at Universidad del Rosario is unique in Colombia and Latin America. It trains well-rounded professionals with a transdisciplinary education in aspects of vital importance for society and science. It integrates all aspects that make up planet Earth, including geology, climatology, sustainability, hydrology, and the interaction of these with the biosphere, including the human component. Professionals in Earth System Sciences have and will continue to play a key role in the decades to come, in local, regional, and global settings.
*Limited places: registration and enrollment payment for those admitted to the Earth System Sciences program is limited to the 15 places authorized by the Ministry of Education for the current period. Similarly, places are guaranteed based on the order of admission and the verification of payments.

Earth System Sciences?
PLAN DE ESTUDIOS
The program has a curriculum composed of a basic core in science, followed by a disciplinary core (major) and ending with an in-depth core (minor). These are accompanied by strengthening cores in diversification and Rosarista training.
The Earth System Sciences’ curriculum has low prerequisites for each subject, allowing for greater autonomy in training and, consequently, the possibility of progressing to a Master's degree Natural Sciences.

To graduate, you have a wide variety of degree track options that include: a degree project in basic or applied research, cross-institutional studies with the Master’s in Natural Sciences, national or international internships, a research article, and the development of technological or computer tools.

He is the leader of the Neotropical Traditional and Molecular Paleontology Research Group (PaleoNeo) and his research focuses on vertebrate paleontology and projects that explore sustainable development opportunities with communities. .

Climatologist with a master's degree, Ph.D., and postdoctoral experience at universities in France and Germany. He is the leader of the Climate-Ecosystem Interactions Research Group (ICE) and his research focuses on the impacts of deforestation on climate, water, and carbon.

Álvaro Ávila, Ph.D.
He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Applied Meteorology from Universidade Federal de Viçosa-UFV (Viçosa, Brazil). He has two postdoctorates in the area of atmospheric sciences, the first at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa-UFV (Viçosa, Brazil), and the second at the Universidade Federal de Itajubá (Itajubá, Brazil). He is a graduate in Agricultural Engineering from Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia). During the last years, he has focused his research work on the study of the historical and future impact of hydrometeorological extremes in tropical countries. Since August 2022, he has been an expert representative of the World Meteorological Organization in the agroclimatology and climatology of Colombia. His teaching activities have primarily focused on the field of Earth System Sciences, encompassing both undergraduate and graduate courses. He teaches various disciplines, including hydrology, hydrological simulation, meteorology, and climatology.

Sebastián Zapata, Ph.D.
Geological Engineer with a master's degree in mineral resources from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín campus. He completed his doctoral training at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and his postdoctoral experience in Panama, the United States, and Colombia. He is also a member of the Geology and Geophysics Study Group, EGEO, which aims to understand the tectonic evolution of the Northern Andes and the Caribbean. His research employs various techniques to reconstruct landscape and paleogeography evolution over scales ranging from thousands to millions of years. His focus is on understanding the tectonic processes occurring at shallow and intermediate crustal levels that control the spatiotemporal evolution of relief and sedimentary systems.

Stijn Hantson, Ph.D.
Stijn graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University. He continued his studies with a master’s degree in Geographic Information Technology at the University of Alcalá, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in the same field of study. He has 4 years of experience as a postdoctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe institute of Technology and worked 3.5 years as a researcher at the University of California, Irvine. Since 2021, he has been a professor at Universidad del Rosario, where his research focuses on understanding the functioning of the Earth system from an ecological approach. One of his most advanced research areas is the study of the impact of forest fires on biogeochemical cycles.

Oceanóloga con Doctorado en Oceanografía de la Universidad de Concepción, Chile. Ha trabajado en los centros de investigación oceanográficos e hidrográficos en Chile (COPAS), México (CICESE) y Colombia (OCEANICOS). Experta en manejo y análisis de datos satelitales, de modelos de reanálisis globales como CROCO/ROMS, ELCOM, TESEO, VISUAL PLUMES, WaveWatch-III y OPENDRIFT, para simular corrientes, olas, propiedades termohalinas, plumas de sedimento y derrames de hidrocarburos para profundizar en la dinámica marino-costera.

Graduates in Earth System Sciences possess highly developed skills in research, leadership, and interdisciplinary work. They are trained with a strong foundation in ethical, environmental, and social values. They will also be professionals with excellent communication and computer skills, along with the ability to master a second language. They are adept at formulating and executing projects that have an impact at local, regional, and international cooperation levels.

SPACES
The Earth System Sciences program is carried out in laboratories and other locations in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which include 7 research laboratories and 4 teaching laboratories with state-of-the-art technology. The program will be expanded to include additional laboratory and teaching spaces in a new building at the Quinta de Mutis campus in the future. Currently, the program and its projects have access to the university's High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities, as well as the opportunity to develop projects and academic experiences at the José Celestino Mutis Experimental Field Station, located in the municipality of La Vega, Cundinamarca.
