Recent Developments in Impact Evaluation: Differences in Differences Designs

Difference-in-Differences (DiD) methods are widely used in the estimation of causal effects of policy interventions in the social and medical sciences. At their core, DiD methods leverage the fact that units are exposed to treatment at different points in time (or never exposed). Consequently, researchers can recover an average treatment effect by comparing outcomes from different treatment cohorts, before and after they have been exposed to treatment. A major advantage of using the DiD framework is that we can account for time trends and (time-invariant) unobserved heterogeneity when recovering causal effects.

Addressed to

This course is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students of economics and statistics, applied researchers, and professors in economics and statistics. Economists interested in updating their econometric knowledge are also welcome.

Objetivos

This seminar offers a thorough introduction to classical and modern Difference-in-Differences methods. The main goal of this course is to enable researchers to get closer to the DiD research frontier.

  • To develop a depth understanding of the canonical two-periods, two-groups DiD.
  • To explore the role of covariates in DiD setups.
  • To introduce the recent methods of DiD with variation in treatment timing.
  • To study the design-based inference in DiD settings.

At the end of the seminar, we expect that you should be comfortable and confident in using DiD methods to tackle your own research questions.

Methodology

Each lecture session will conclude with a hands-on exercise reviewing the content covered, to be completed on your own. Additional lab sessions will be held during the course, where you can review the exercise results with the instructor and ask any questions.

Program Benefits

Applied researchers and students will be exposed to the frontier of differences in differences methods, an area that have witnessed a wave of recent developments. The DID method is one of the most important tools for applied researchers and Pedro Sant’Anna is one of the lending scholars in the field.
