The shield

The shield is the most important element in the visual identity of Universidad del Rosario and has undergone modifications throughout the university’s history.

The Cross of Calatrava, central element of the shield

The Cross of Calatrava is the symbol of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) founded in 1215 by Domingo de Guzmán. For belonging to that order, the founder of the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Fray Cristóbal de Torres, inherits this distinctive emblem made up of four lily flowers adapted in black and white to the Rosary. From 1936, the Cross of Calatrava is framed within the lambrequins designed by Dionisio de Renart, author of the statue of the founder located in the central courtyard of the Cloister, replacing the Dominican iconographic symbology originally proposed by the sculptor.

Universidad del Rosario, religious symbol

The Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is known among the students as "El Rosario", which is one of the most significant symbols of the Institution. In the shield that identifies Alma Mater, a rosary surrounds the Calatrava Cross in an oval shape. On the shield the points symbolize the beads and a cross protrudes at the bottom.
